Review the cable setup for the DVD player since it was identified as the source of the problem. There is also a line-in (optical and analog) for putting audio into the Mac, not out of it. And yeah sorry, it's plugged in to the "Headphone" socket.

You might try this: Play a CD, internet radio, etc., then click the volume icon and see if the green bar is moving.
