Sometimes the SMC worked, sometimes the PRAM zap worked, but mostly the old unplug the machine from power, close the lid and wait a few minutes was the key for me. Holding Option+Command+P+R and then holding power to boot up worked for me while I didn't have a boot chime. Yes, it got that bad… But I learnt to understand and fix this MacBook on my own. That solved the issue, but the brightness and volume keys still did not work. Thanks for the help, you've saved me a lot of time! Restart,upon the chime, press option+command+p+r until the chime comes again. I had three noises though before it loaded with the white Apple logo, still, at least it's okay!
