inserting toothpick, matchstick on only make problem worse. i tried your method and didn't work, but then opened garageband and that worked. although i had to try it several times and i had to quit itunes not pause it to fix it.. his comment is here I get no audio through my headphones (which work fine in other devices such as my Ipod).

Why does this happen? The frustrating thing is that when you open the Mac OS Sound preference pane, it simply confirms that it is stuck and won't let you change it to the normal speakers I have iTunes in my interface, opera but not safari. Ridiculous!!!
I had actually rebooted the machine and even that didn't work. No sound at all: no itunes music, no video playback sound, no alert sounds - nothing. For what it's worth, the procedure I've outlined above doesn't always work for some reason.
