Turns out I just needed to move the receiver further away. I did all sorts of things, same as you I had it next to the keyboard. However, the battery status may not be accurate if a wireless connection problem exists. PUll the holder out and make it hold the keyboard so it doesn't touch the desk.

You lose too much precision without it. As weird as it may sounds, try placing your transceiver upside down UNDER your mouse and keyboard, maybe even on the ground. Red bars bad connection. Keyboard shows a little wear, especially around the edges - does not impact operation.

I'd replace it if you can't fix it.
