It should work as a plain USB keyboard/mouse. Thank you for your feedback. all I had to do was supply them with the model#, serial# and where I purchased the item from. I used the on screen keyboard temporarily, then decided after a bit of on line research, that the Microsoft Wireless 3000 Desktop combination of wireless keyboard/mouse would solve my problem.

Apparently I am not the only one that has this issue and it looks like Microsoft has no solution for this other than to replace it. Make sure you include the unit and box numbers (if assigned).
