Use HDMI (if your TV has it) or DVI, not VGA. Video Tips Don't set the display resolution too high for your TV, otherwise the TV may not display correctly. You say it's HDMI, now hdmi is just an input/output means of displaying video and audio in high definition. Clicking it might detect your VGA.
