Just had to do a fresh install. But if still no sound, install MInt 13 ... 14 has occasional bugs. Glad that you have sound again in your computer. If it fixed your sound problem, you may want to fix brightness issue as well. After a cold boot (shut down and remove the power cord - for a laptop also the battery if you can) sound was working fine as if it always had! My sound card is an Asus Essence STX, which the system detects as the AV200 chipset at the start, but no sound will come out until after ALSA has been reloaded. Followed every step. If at the next start up, you hear the login sound at the lock screen, you know it worked like a charm. Still searching for answers.
